Reading Challenge 2017

I’m not about making resolutions per se anymore. I’ve got two New Years and my birthday and every Sunday for do overs. I could wake up at 12 o’clock and decide to start something new. I’m all about being a better person each day, any time. 

I do set goals however, (duh!) and try my best to achieve them. Last year, I challenged myself to read 100 books but what with school, moving, starting a family, there was no way I was going to complete it. I barely even went passed 10%. Shame!

This year, I’m trying to read 50 books for my challenge this year.  But January is almost halfway gone and I’ve spent all this time binge-watching tons of silly stuff on Netflix. God help me. I don’t have any specific criteria on what books I want to focus on, although I am leaning towards more fiction this year. I need to unwind without thinking too much. 

I noticed for the first time that there are tons of reading challenge ideas floating around on the internet. Like this one from PopSugar that @thegirldorian on twitter showed me:

“A story within a story”? Lol, I have no idea how many books fall under that category. 

Personally, I just log in my progress into my Goodreads account. I’m open to recommendations from my fellow book lovers and if any happen to fit into any of the categories above, I’m willing to give it a shot.

Hello August!

It seems like only yesterday it was January and now we are looking forward to the end of the year. It is crazy how time flies so quickly but what is even crazier is the fact the we do not enjoy the time that has passed. We are constantly chasing something or trying to hit our goals that we don’t pause to breathe and enjoy the journey.
For me, that’s how most of the year has been. I have been constantly chasing certain dreams and right now I’m spent and tired. I have been living with the idea that my life should look a certain way, I should be at a certain weight or I should be earning a certain amount of money. This month I have decided it is time to reset. I have decided to breathe and enjoy the process and just live.
I am trying to get rid of the ‘shoulds’. Because in all honesty, how it is right now is how it should be. I am here right now and that’s enough. If I drop dead now, I really won’t want to see all the times I spent thinking about what should have been. All I’d want to see would be the times I actually lived in the present. How I enjoyed right now. Hopefully, that would be enough for me.

One way to enjoy the present would be to do the things you love and for me that would be making Bucket Lists…and living them out. Or as this crazy blogger would call it, Life Lists. I have had a major one since forever but I’m constantly waiting on something big to happen before I get to it. I get a bucket list sent to my email every month so this time I decided to get to it. Here is my list for the month.

●Try a new fruit.
●Grow something.
●Go geocaching for a day.
●Write a short story.
●Visit a place you have never been to before.
●Try out a new cuisine.
●Finish at least 2 books this month.
●Complete a drawing or painting.
●Go swimming.
●Make a new friend.

I hope to finish this at the end of the month. Any awesome stories will be shared.
Don’t forget to try something fun. Create your own list. Whatever you do, live.

Be Selfish

How are you guys doing with your ‘resolutions’? The first month in 2015 is already over (pretty quick, huh?), and sadly a lot of us have dropped half of our ‘resolutions’ already.

It’s kinda obvious that I’m always talking about goals and self improvement. I’m all about that. But the truth, while it is fun to write down all the things you intended to achieve in the future, it is a lot harder and a lot less fun actually working to fulfil those goals.

It’s February 1st and I’m sure some of us expected a sudden change in our characters, our weights, and everything we wished for in general. Honey, it took you about 9 months to be made, it took you a whole lot more time to develop the habits you have now, so it is going to take even more time to achieve your goals. It has to be a conscious effort. You will fall and get up again. That’s what makes your journey unique and exciting. Even when you love what you have started, creating time for it might be very hard.

So today, for the month of February, I want to leave you (and me first) with a couple of advices.

1. Make your goals realistic for you. A friend of mine told me to join her in reading 200 books this year. As much as I love to read, I just do not have enough time at the moment. I have not even finished the first book I started. So, I told myself, I would read as much as I can this year. I have to be realistic and understand that I have a lot on my plate right now. That way, even if I don’t read up to 200 books, I won’t feel like I failed at my goal.

2. Make your goals fun and pleasurable. If you have a goal that seems like the one I mentioned above, after a while it begins to look like a chore. All the fun gets taken out of it because you have put yourself in a box. Relax. Take it easy on yourself. There are tons of things daily that stress us out already.

3. Do it for you. Not for your friends. Not for your partner. Not for social media. Make a change for you. Whether it is losing weight or travelling more, do it because you want to. Not because everyone is doing it or someone says you should.

4. Everyday do something that gets you closer to your goal.

Overall, when it involves improving ourselves, we have to be ready to fight like hell to do it. Whether it is working out daily, eating healthier, quitting alcohol, it is not going to be easy.
So take a minute and think about your goals again. Ask yourself why you want to engage in those particular things. Take a big breath. Be selfish. Make those goals about yourself first. Put yourself first. Embrace your journey.
Trust me, it would work out this time.
